What is Academic Bank of Credits (ABC)?

  3. What is Academic Bank of Credits (ABC)?

If you are applying to colleges and submitting your admission form, there is no doubt that the concept of Academic Bank of Credits or simply ABC is quite familiar to you. ABC is considered to be one of the major transformations in the system of handling credits in the Indian higher educational system and learning about it beforehand can help you avoid many problems after enrolling in some institution.

Academic Bank of Credits is the name given to the national digital platform launched as part of India's National Education Policy of 2020. It is similar to the concept of virtual banking for your studies instead of saving money. This guide discusses what exactly ABC does, how you can create your ABC ID, and why it is important for people who want to pursue flexible programs recognised by UGC.

What is the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC)? The Digital Evolution of Learning

ABC is a digital storehouse that holds the credits students earn throughout their education, working much like a bank deposits money into your savings account.

That’s what it all comes down to:

  • Every time the student finishes a class, exam, or certification at a recognised institute, these credits will be transferred directly into their ABC account.

  • The whole idea behind ABC is to give students more control over how they pace their education, instead of locking them into one rigid path at a single institution.

  • Students can accumulate credits from multiple recognised colleges and universities, and those credits stay valid and usable even if they switch programs or take a break along the way.

The Mechanics of ABC: How Your College Credits Are Earned, Stored, and Transferred

There are a couple of parts that make this entire concept possible. Here’s what makes it happen.

  • Credits can only be deposited by recognised institutions that have been authorised by the University Grants Commission in the ABC account of the student. The student does not have access to add any credits to his/her ABC account.

  • Credits that have been deposited in the ABC account can be utilised in future for the next seven years and hence, it is a possibility for the student to use those credits to achieve a degree, diploma, or certificate.

  • The system provides for multiple points of entry and exits whereby the student can choose to take a certificate after one year of education or a diploma after two years, and even complete the degree without losing his/her credits.

  • ABC also enables interdisciplinary education since the student studying one area can get credits from another field and utilise those credits in his academic career.

  • All credit records can be accessed through DigiLocker.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Generate Your ABC ID via DigiLocker

While it is common for institutions to issue ABC ID for the students enrolled in them, you can also get yours in a few simple steps:

  • Sign in to DigiLocker through your registered mobile number or sign up if you don’t have an account.

  • Go to the education tab on the DigiLocker website and click on Academic Bank of Credits.

  • Select the ABC service, which will take you to the official ABC portal.

  • Choose your higher education institution from the list provided.

  • Click on generating ABC ID, and your ID gets created and linked directly to your DigiLocker account.

Once this is done, your ABC ID becomes the account where all your future academic credits get recorded, checked, and stored.

The Big Perks: Why the ABC ID is a Gamechanger for Modern Students

Beyond the technical process, ABC changes a few real things for students on a daily basis:

  • Learning pathways that can change flexibly. There is no longer any necessity for students to go through all courses in one educational institution. They will be able to develop a curriculum that fits their needs and preferences as well as takes into account their pace of learning.

  • Faster credit transfer. Moving between institutions or resuming a paused degree no longer means starting over. Credits already earned simply carry forward.

  • Recognition of prior learning. Skills or knowledge gained outside a traditional classroom, including relevant work experience, can sometimes be credited under the ABC framework as well.

  • No duplicate and unnecessary paperwork. With all the credits stored in a verified digital wallet, there will be no need to ask for copies of physical transcripts and verify completed courses again and again.

For those individuals who have other commitments in addition to studying, such flexibility may be important enough.

Maximizing Your Flexible Degree: The Role of ABC ID at DYP Online

In case you are opting for an UGC-entitled online degree with flexibility, it will definitely come in handy to have knowledge about ABC because credit-based degrees have a slightly different method of awarding credits to the students.

  • The DYP Online provides a number of online MBAs, BBAs, MCA, and BCA degrees, which are specially targeted at working professionals and students who wish to complete their studies conveniently.

  • Given the fact that all these courses provide online education with credit-based learning options, it will be quite handy to have your academic credits already transferred to your ABC account in order to have a smoother experience.

  • By ensuring your ABC status in advance, you will save yourself from many troubles when completing your application and earning your degree later.

Conclusion

The Academic Bank of Credits is one of the more practical changes to come out of NEP 2020, giving students real flexibility in how they build their education instead of forcing everyone through the same rigid structure. Once your ABC ID is set up, your academic progress stays with you no matter where you study next, which makes the whole system genuinely worth understanding before you start your admission process rather than after.
