  3. What is APAAR ID?

Perhaps you have been introduced to the APAAR ID for the first time right here and now. Or it might have been mentioned in a school form or college admission application portal, and you found yourself nodding your head without truly understanding what it is all about. Perhaps you already possess an APAAR ID but would like to understand more about its workings and uses.

Whatever your background, we are here to help you out. In this guide, we will cover everything that you need to know about APAAR ID and explain what it is all about, why India's education system is embracing it in board exams and colleges, and how you can get an APAAR ID.

APAAR ID Meaning: What Exactly Is It?

“APAAR” is an acronym that stands for “Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry”. It is a 12-digit ID number provided to students across India under the Government’s “One Nation, One Student ID Program”, which is a component of the NEP-2020.

The reasons behind the importance of this system:

  • It acts as a digital locker, which is created for academic purposes alone and holds data such as marksheets, certificates, degrees, and any other extra accomplishments like Olympiad participation or sports achievements.

  • This is linked with DigiLocker app as well as the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), which helps in verification and sharing of academic data easily.

  • Whereas a roll number and admission ID get changed whenever the student moves to schools or colleges, the ID of APAAR stays with him throughout his lifetime from pre-primary to postgraduate and even PhD level."

Why APAAR ID Matters for Every Student in India

The basic idea of APAAR ID is to do away with paperwork and prevent the loss and duplication of academic documents.

This works in the following way:

  • Students will have to show less paperwork for admissions, entrance examination verification will be quicker, and every qualification achieved will have a permanent and tamper-proof document.

  • CBSE and several state boards have already started linking APAAR ID to their List of Candidates for board exams.

  • It's becoming relevant for national entrance exams too. It isn't mandatory everywhere yet, but agencies conducting exams like JEE Main and NEET have added APAAR ID fields to their application forms to speed up identity verification and reduce impersonation.

  • Beyond exams, APAAR ID plays a direct role in the Academic Bank of Credits system, letting students accumulate and transfer academic credits across institutions and even across different modes of study, including online and distance programs.

Key Benefits of APAAR ID for Students

Beyond its role in policy, APAAR ID translates into real, everyday advantages for students:

  • One centralized record: All your marksheets, certificates, and achievements sit in a single verified digital format instead of scattered physical files.

  • Faster admissions: Institutions can pull up your verified academic history instantly, cutting down document back-and-forth during enrollment.

  • Seamless credit transfer: Since APAAR ID connects to the Academic Bank of Credits, credits earned in one programme or institution can move with you to another.

  • Fraud-resistant verification: A tamper-proof digital record makes it harder for fake marksheets or degrees to slip through.

  • Lifelong continuity: The same ID follows you from school through postgraduate study, so you're not starting from scratch every time you switch institutions.

APAAR ID Registration: Step-by-Step Guide

Creating an APAAR ID is a straightforward process, and there are two common routes depending on whether you're in school or higher education.

Through your school (for school students): Schools verify a student's demographic details, obtain parental consent for minors, and generate the APAAR ID, which is then linked to DigiLocker app for safekeeping.

Through DigiLocker app (for higher education students):

  1. Access the DigiLocker website or application and login or create an account using your mobile number.

  1. Provide your Aadhar number for identification purposes.

  1. Go to "Academic Bank of Credits" in DigiLocker and click on the APAAR ID tab.

  1. Enter the following details: your full name, date of birth, gender, identification information, year of admission, and name of institution.

  1. Permit DigiLocker to send your data to ABC. Once approved, your APAAR ID will be displayed under your "Issued Documents" section of DigiLocker.

Once processed, the APAAR ID appears in your DigiLocker "Issued Documents" section, ready to download or share whenever needed.

APAAR ID vs Academic Bank of Credits (ABC): What's the Difference?

When you read something regarding APAAR ID, you will always find the phrase Academic Bank of Credits written next to it. This is where several misconceptions arise. They belong to the same digital education platform but are not the same.

Here's how to tell them apart at a glance:

Feature

APAAR ID

Academic Bank of Credits (ABC)

What it is

A unique, lifelong identity number for a student

A digital repository that stores and manages academic credits

Purpose

Creates a single academic identity for verification

Enables credit accumulation and transfer between institutions

Scope

Covers marksheets, certificates, and achievements

Covers credits earned through courses and programmes

How it's used

To verify a student's academic history

To redeem or transfer credits toward a degree

In short, APAAR ID is the identity that unlocks the system, while ABC is the mechanism that manages the credits linked to that identity.

APAAR ID and DYP Online Degree Programs

If you're planning to study through a UGC entitled online degree program, APAAR ID adds a layer of convenience that's easy to miss until admission time actually arrives.

Here's why it matters for online learners:

  • The online courses offered by D Y Patil University, such as Online MBA, BBA, MCA, and BCA degrees, are for people who are working professionals or want degrees that are verified and accepted throughout India.

  • In cases where the existing academic documents such as school mark sheets or degree are already connected with the APAAR ID, then the process of verifying the eligibility becomes faster and requires lesser documentation.

  • It also helps with credit recognition. Since APAAR ID connects to the Academic Bank of Credits, learners switch between offline and online modes, or transferring credits earned elsewhere, and get the benefit of one single, verified academic trail.

  • For anyone applying to a structured, UGC approved online degree, generating an APAAR ID before starting the admission process is a small step that can save real time later.

Conclusion

APAAR ID is quickly becoming a standard part of how academic records are managed in India, right from school report cards to postgraduate degrees. It's not just another government ID; it's built to make verification faster, records more secure, and moving between institutions a lot smoother. For anyone applying to a program like DYP Online, creating your APAAR ID through DigiLocker takes only a few minutes and can simplify admissions, exams, and credit transfers down the line, so it's worth getting done early rather than waiting until it's needed.
